ByWard Fruit Market closing in May after 26 years in business

Another long-time business in Ottawa’s ByWard Market is closing its doors after more than a quarter-century in business.

The ByWard Fruit Market plans to shut down by the end of May.

Isaac and Miriam Farbiasz have operated the store since 1999. They tell CTV News Ottawa the ByWard Market isn’t what it used to be, and the closure of Saslove’s Meat Market down the street has affected their sales.

The closure of nearby William Street to cars was also blamed for hurting business.

There has been a string of closures in the ByWard Market in recent months, including Saslove’s, Blue Cactus, and the Courtyard restaurant. Dunn’s Famous Deli is also set to close later this month.

Many of the businesses that closed their doors have, however, quickly found replacements. Saslove’s will be replaced by a Philthy Philly’s sandwich restaurant, the Courtyard was replaced by a Beyond the Pale taproom, a Chuck’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill will move into the former Dunn’s building after the deli closes, and the Blue Cactus was replaced by a new restaurant called Grey’s Social Eatery.
