Cosplayers take over Ottawa Comiccon winter edition

Published:

Hundreds of comic book and movie lovers flocked to the EY Centre to dress up in their best costumes. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

Hundreds of fans filled the EY Centre for the winter edition of Ottawa Comiccon this weekend.

Cosplayers and collectors came out wearing costumes of their favourite characters from television, film, and comics, with the chance to interact and shop for memorabilia.

The event was free to attend.

Comiccon vice-president Scott Péron says the event continues to grow every year since it launched in 2012.

“I think there’s just been a general acceptance of geek culture, and it’s just become more common,” Péron said.

“It’s not uncool suddenly to like things that traditionally would have been, ‘oh, you’re a geek or a nerd’ and that was a bad thing.”

Fans of all ages ventured through dozens of vendors shopping for figurines, comics, DVD’s, paintings or to show off their costumes.

“It just gives you a place to come celebrate that and do it in a safe space for everybody,” Péron said.

Comiccon was last held in the city last September and included several special guests, including Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood and comedian John Cleese. The event drew a record setting 42,000 people.

Ottawa Comiccon will return to the EY Centre Sept. 5 - 7, 2025.
