The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) came across a total of seven stunt drivers Friday night with one of them speeding close to 200 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 417 in Ottawa.
Police say they stopped six drivers on the highway, while the seventh refused to stop and escaped at a dangerously high speed reaching 280 km/h.
In an email to CTV News Ottawa Saturday, the OPP said the seventh driver was involved in a road rage incident.
“The suspect vehicle, a Dodge Charger SRT8 tried to purposely force another vehicle – a Cadillac Escalade – into the center guard rail,” reads the statement.
“When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off at the high speeds.”
Police note that no plate information was obtained at the time.
The OPP would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122.
According to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (OHTA), failure to stop to a police officer when requested to do so is a serious offence.
The driver involved in the road rage incident could face seven demerit points, a fine of $1000 -$10000, and/or jail time.
Among the drivers who were stopped Friday night on the highway, three were caught going 154 km/h. Three others registered 155 km/h, 158 km/h and 152 km/h.
All six drivers had their vehicles impounded.
They also received a 30-day driving suspension and six demerit points.
Upon conviction, they could also be facing a $2,000 fine and a one year driving prohibition.
