Significant rainfall, strong wind gusts possible in Ottawa, eastern Ontario this weekend

Environment Canada is warning of the possibility of significant rainfall amounts this weekend in Ottawa and eastern Ontario.

The weather agency issued a statement Wednesday, saying it will be in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday – 11 p.m. Sunday. It adds strong wind gusts are also expected.

“Remember to consult your local Conservation Authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for details about flooding,” reads the statement.

The weather agency told CTV News Ottawa that preliminary information calls for 15-25 millimetres of rain in Ottawa. It notes that the rain is expected to intensify on Sunday.

This weekend is also going to be windy, with wind gusts ranging between 60 and 70 km/h.

Currently, the situation warrants a water safety statement, Isabelle Maltais, director of watershed science and engineering at the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) told CTV News.

“Water Safety: High flows, unstable banks, melting ice or other factors that could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected,” reads the RVCA’s website.

Maltais notes that they are monitoring the situation closely.

“We are still analyzing the situation,” Maltais said.
