Ottawa firefighters were quick to extinguish an apartment kitchen fire on Wednesday evening.
Ottawa Fire Services says multiple 911 callers reported smoke and flames visible from a unit on the 10th storey of a building in the 200 block of Woodridge Crescent, south of Carling Avenue shortly before 6:40 p.m.
When crews arrived at the scene, they confirmed smoke and flames were shooting out of a 10th floor balcony door.
Firefighters called for additional resources and began a “fast attack” on the flames.
“(They) quickly made their way to the 10th floor where they were met with heavy black smoke throughout the hallway and zero visibility conditions. Firefighters located the fire unit and advanced a hose line inside,” according to Ottawa fire.
Ottawa paramedics say four people were assessed at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. All were released at the scene.
An OC Transpo bus was dispatched to provide shelter for residents.
Ottawa fire says the blaze was extinguished and contained to the area of origin before it could spread. The fire was declared under control shortly after 7 p.m.
High pressurized fans were used to ventilate smoke out of the structure. Residents were allowed to go back to their units when the air quality was deemed safe.
Victim Assistance was called to the scene to help the residents displaced by the fire, according to Ottawa fire.
An Ottawa Fire Services investigator was called to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
