Health officials warn of possible measles exposures at 3 locations in Kingston, Ont.

Alberta's measles outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down, and doctors and infectious disease experts say the situation is now critical.

Health officials are warning people of a possible exposure to measles in Kingston, Ont. this month, including on the campus of Queen’s University.

The Southeast Public Health (SPH) says residents may have been exposed to measles at three locations between Feb. 9 and 13, “related to a new single positive case of measles.”

Anyone who visited the three locations are being warned they may have been exposed to the contagious viral infection and should monitor for symptoms.

• Goodlife Fitness on Barrack Street. Feb. 9 between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
• Queen’s University Kingston Hall. Feb. 10 between 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
• Metro on Barrie Street. Feb. 13 between 4:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air and can survive on surfaces for up to two hours. Infants, pregnant individuals and those who have a weakened immune system are at higher risk of severe complications, including brain inflammation and even death,” the health unit said in a statement.

Symptoms of measles include:

• high fever, cough, runny nose
• red, watery eyes (pink eye or conjunctivitis)
• red blotchy rash

Health officials say residents should monitor for symptoms until 21 days following your exposure date, even if you’re vaccinated. Symptoms may appear seven to 21 days after exposure.

Residents are urged to check their vaccination records to ensure protection from measles. The health unit says immunity requires two doses of a measles vaccine or proof of immunity through a laboratory test.

According to federal data, 239 confirmed cases and 15 probable cases have been reported across Canada so far in 2026, including one in Ontario. The case in Ontario was reported the last week of January.
