OC Transpo marking Black History Month with 3 double-decker murals

You’ll soon see large murals on the sides of three double-decker buses in Ottawa.

They’re part of OC Transpo’s effort to mark Black History Month in the capital.

“With striking colours and intricate designs, the mural reflects the City of Ottawa’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion,” OC Transpo said Thursday.

“It symbolizes resilience, pride, and the shared journey toward a future rooted in belonging. and brings to life this year’s Black History Month theme: Legacies worth preserving, creating, and celebrating.”

The large murals were developed in collaboration with Black History Ottawa, and the City’s African, Caribbean, Black Employees Network.

It will say, “February is Black History Month. Legacies worth preserving, creating and celebrating,” in both English and French.

OC Transpo says the design features several symbols of African heritage.

“At the center of the design is Kente, a traditional Ghanaian textile known for its bold colours, intricate patterns, and deep cultural meaning,” OC Transpo says.

“Originally from the Akan tribe in Ghana, Kente was worn by royalty during special ceremonies and is now a symbol of cultural pride and connection, embraced during special occasions. The specific Kente pattern, Babadua, reflects toughness and resilience—qualities that mirror the strength and contributions of Black Canadians.”

The colours of red, yellow, green, and black each represent values of sacrifice, holiness, growth, and unity. A golden chief’s throne represents leadership, and the open-ended thread symbolizes limitless potential and a bright future.
