The Ottawa Police Service was busy catching drivers going way over the speed limit at the start of the holiday weekend, laying three stunt driving charges on Good Friday.

The Escort and Traffic Enforcement Unit says it stopped a 54-year-old going 143 km/h on Highway 174 at Place d’Orléans Drive. The speed limit in the area is 80 km/h.

A 31-year-old using their “mom’s car” was going 153 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the 174 at Blair Road.

Police also caught a 29-year-old going 64 km/h over the speed limit on the MacDonald-Cartier

Bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau.

The charge of stunt driving comes with an automatic 30-day driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impound.

Upon conviction, offenders can face a fine between $2,000 and $10,000, a further one to three year licence suspension and the possibility of six months in jail.

Ottawa’s city council voted unanimously this week to call on the Ontario government to strengthen legislation around vehicle-related crime, including stunt driving.

A total of 370 stunt driving charges were laid in Ottawa last year, nearly double from what was reported in 2019, according to the City of Ottawa, but it is down overall from the more than 600 stunt driving charges laid in 2021.
