The public is being warned about recent distraction thefts across the City of Ottawa, with thieves targeting jewellery, phones and purses.
The Ottawa Police Service says suspects are approaching individuals who are alone in public spaces, particularly parking lots, and engaging in conversations under false pretenses, “such as asking for directions or offering a gift.”
“In many cases, they attempt to place a piece of jewellery, such as a necklace, around the person’s neck while distracting them,” police said. “These suspects are known to use charm and deception to get close, and they often target visible jewellery or personal belongings.”
Victims will only realize after the fact that a valuable item has been stolen.
Police offer four tips to protect yourself and others:
- Avoid displaying expensive or sentimental jewellery in public.
- Stay alert to your surroundings in parking lots and less busy areas.
- Do not allow strangers to invade your personal space or touch you. “If someone tries to place an object on you, it’s a red flag,” police said.
- If you’re approached by a stranger “under suspicious circumstances,” police recommend walking away.
Police say if you’ve been the victim of or a witness to a distraction theft, do not attempt to follow the suspect.
“Call 9-1-1 immediately and try to remember as many details as possible, including their physical description, clothing, and any vehicle involved (make, model, license plate, etc.),” police said.
