Ontario Provincial Police say officers laid seven charges for not wearing a seatbelt during an enforcement blitz in the Upper Ottawa Valley over the long weekend.

The OPP was focusing efforts on seatbelt use across Ontario. The penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is a $240 fine and two demerit points.

In a news release, the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP said, in addition to seatbelt charges, officers laid three impaired driving charges, 31 speeding charges, one distracted driving charge, one charge under the Liquor Licence Control Act and three charges under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

“Over the course of the four-day campaign officers also responded to over 290 calls for service,” the OPP said.

Police say despite this campaign being over, officers are committed to traffic safety enforcement and education year-round.
