Two people are facing charges and police are searching for a third suspect after a “beloved community mural” was defaced in Ottawa’s Lowertown neighbourhood two months ago, according to police.

The Ottawa Police Service says a mural on Wurtemburg Street was “marred by graffiti” during the evening of January 16.

“The next day, the graffiti was noticed and reported to police,” police said in a media release.

“Three suspects have been identified as responsible for the damage. Two of the suspects have been arrested and charged. Investigators are asking for help to locate a third individual.”

The third suspect is wanted on a charge of mischief exceeding $5,000. Police say the two suspects arrested and charged are facing a charge of mischief exceeding $5,000.

Police say the mural will be restored in the coming months.

In January, Coun. Stephanie Plante said she was “absolutely gutted to learn” the new mural on Wurtemberg at Rideau Street was vandalized.

“The artist worked incredibly hard and everyone in the neighbourhood pitched in for funding.”

The mural was created by Stephanie Babij.
