Quebec provincial police are asking for the public’s help identifying a driver who fled the scene of a collision on Highway 50 in Gatineau.

The Sûreté du Québec said it happened at around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, in the westbound lanes near La Vérendrye. According to police, a westbound driver changed lanes at the same time that another driver was attempted to merge into the highway from the La Vérendrye on-ramp. One driver then crossed the median and struck a heavy truck that was travelling eastbound.

Police said two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

The vehicle that had just entered the highway might have struck another westbound vehicle before fleeing toward Montcalm Street, police said. Investigators are now looking for this driver.

The suspect vehicle is described as a red sedan, likely with damage to the driver’s side. A young woman was seen inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Shortly after the crash, the driver of the red sedan stopped their vehicle on the side of the highway between the La Vérendrye and La Gappe ramps. The driver of a white SUV pulled up behind them and stopped, taking up part of a lane of traffic, forcing another driver to go around.

Police are looking for anyone who might have information about the driver of the red vehicle, or who might have dashcam footage from near the scene.

Anyone with information on this vehicle or its driver is asked to contact the Sûreté du Québec Criminal Information Center at 1-800-659-4264.
