Repair work on broken water main in Pembroke to start Wednesday

The City of Pembroke says repair work on a major broken water main will begin Wednesday.

In the meantime, the city continues to ask residents in Pembroke and Laurentian Valley to conserve water as much as possible.

“Tomlinson, the specialized contractor hired for the job, will start repair work of the large diameter trunk water main Wednesday, November 26. For the smoothest start to the repairs, it is important the water system has enough stored water in both the water tower and the water storage reservoir,” a news release from the city said.

The water remains safe to consume, the city said.

A leak was first detected in the water main Thursday afternoon, but it got worse overnight into Friday morning, prompting the initial request to limit water use.

The city said over the weekend that it restored normal water service to most of the city Friday.

Residents are asked to avoid things like washing cars, and consider running fewer loads of laundry or have short showers instead of baths as examples of ways to save water.

“The City of Pembroke thanks all system users for the efforts they’ve made to reduce consumption since late last week when the watermain break happened,” the city said.
