Transport truck driver stops in live lane of traffic to have a coffee with car driver on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa

The drivers of a transport truck and a car are facing multiple fines after stopping on Highway 417 in Ottawa to have a coffee Saturday afternoon, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Shortly after 5 p.m., police came across a stopped vehicle and a transport truck on the highway near Moodie Drive. Officers note that the car was on the shoulder and the transport was in the live lane of traffic.

“Where the vehicles were stopped was a live lane of traffic, the on ramp from Moodie onto Highway 417 West,” The OPP told CTV News Ottawa in a statement Sunday.

“The transport was partially blocking the lane, forcing vehicles to enter the highway more quickly and of course nobody expects to see that when you’re coming around that corner.”

Upon investigation, police found that both drivers had stopped to have a coffee.

Police say since there is signage along the highway telling people that it’s illegal to park along the highway, including the shoulder, the drivers were charged with disobey sign, which is a $110 ticket and two points.

The drivers were also seen standing on the highway, police add.

As a result, “they were both issued tickets for Pedestrian Using Controlled-Access Highway ($50) and Stand on Highway – Interfere with Traffic ($25).”

An inspection of the truck also revealed multiple violations, including “improperly maintained electronic logs and not having a valid registration decal.”

The truck was temporarily taken out of service, and the company was charged, police say.

Live lanes are for driving vehicles. Police say though drivers are allowed to pull off to the side in case of an emergency, they cannot stop in a driving lane.
