What’s playing this weekend: A Spielberg blockbuster, a jaw-dropping action film and a sweltering crime-romance

We're checking out this week's new movies in theatres and at home with Matt Demers, Mr. Hollywood.

If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, has a few options for you.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to discuss three films playing in theatres this weekend, including a summer blockbuster from a legendary director, an action-packed martial arts movie and a sweltering crime-romance.

Disclosure Day (PG-13)

Steven Spielberg is back with another summer blockbuster, and Mr. Hollywood says the “master of cinema” delivers again.

“This is kind of like the X-Files meets Mission Impossible,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“Its got Spielberg’s signature sense of wonder and adventure, and there’s a lot going on where they’re trying to disclose the truth.”

“Disclosure Day” was directed by Spielberg and stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth.

The Furious (Rated R)

Mr. Hollywood says this film from Hong Kong is a “relentless spectacle” that follows a father on a mission to save his daughter from a criminal network.

“This may be the most action-packed movie I’ve seen in the last decade,” he said.

“It’s almost like ballet the way they do the brutality, the fight scenes. It’s jaw-dropping marital arts choreography at its best. I liked this. This is a wild ride. I’m still on an adrenaline high from ‘The Furious.’”

“The Furious” stars Miao Xie, Joe Taslim and Enyou Yang. It was directed by Kenji Tanigaki.

Carolina Caroline (Not rated)

Mr. Hollywood says he left the theatre “quite surprised” with how much he enjoyed the crime-romance film “Carolina Caroline.”

“You want to think almost like Bonnie and Clyde. They’re on the run,” he said.

“I like this. There’s a sweltering chemistry here between our two lead actors, and they mix that crime romance really well and its really affecting as much as it is invigorating.”

The film stars Samara Weaving, Kyle Gallner and Kyra Sedgwick. It was directed by Adam Rehmeier.
