'Turn yourself in': Police update on fatal hit-and-run linked to brawl

A homicide investigation is now underway after a person was struck and killed by a vehicle during an early-morning brawl with a “large group of people” in North York.

Toronto police say officers were called to the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area at approximately 6:01 a.m. following reports of a large group of people fighting.

In an update to reporters at 11:30 a.m., Supt. Jack Gurr said an argument broke out in the area before escalating into a fight involving multiple people.

When officers arrived, they located a man who had been injured and struck by a vehicle.

Toronto paramedics attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, a second person was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Investigators say a light-coloured vehicle was seen fleeing the area shortly after 6 a.m. The vehicle and its occupants remain outstanding police said.

As a result, the Homicide Unit has since taken over the investigation.

Police have not released any suspect descriptions and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities say residents can expect an increased police presence in the area as they continue to gather evidence. Police believe the incident is isolated at this time and say there is no broader risk to public safety.

Speaking at the scene, investigators also issued a direct message to those responsible.

“For the people responsible for this murder, find a lawyer and turn yourselves in,” police said. “Our investigators are actively tracking information, so do yourself that favor, find a lawyer and turn yourself in.”
