Regina police recently responded to two pedestrian collisions on the same day, and say that warmer weather is likely a contributing factor with more people spending time outside.

The first incident involved a seven-year-old girl. Officers were called to Broadway Avenue and Abbott Street on Thursday morning around 8:15 a.m., according to a release from the Regina Police Service (RPS).

When officers got to the scene, they found the child injured on the ground. She was taken to hospital by EMS and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the child was struck by an east-bound vehicle as she tried to walk across Broadway Avenue at a crosswalk, but the investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was hit by a vehicle in the west bound lanes on 9th Avenue North. She was taken to hospital by EMS for minor injuries.

Police said in this instance, the woman was not at a crosswalk or corner when she attempted to cross the street.

Considering these recent pedestrian collisions, RPS offered tips for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists on how to reduce collisions.

RPS advises drivers to make sure they see clearly out of all windows and mirrors, be aware of their surroundings, and remember that all corners are considered crosswalks.

Pedestrians are reminded to cross the street at a designated cross walk or corner, always make sure to check to make sure vehicles are stopped before crossing, check all directions and stay alert of surroundings before crossing.

If pedestrians are at fault, they can be issued a ticket under the Traffic Safety Act, police said

Cyclists are reminded to wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road, including walking your bike when crossing a street.

Also, police remind drivers to obey road closures if they see an active collision investigation, noting that several drivers went through a marked perimeter on one of Thursday’s collision investigation scenes.
