Charlie Kirk vigil held outside Saskatchewan Legislative Building

Supporters and mourners gathered at the Saskatchewan Legislative building for a vigil for Charlie Kirk, the activist shot and killed in the USA last week.

Hundreds gathered outside the Saskatchewan Legislative Building on Tuesday night for a prayer vigil following the death of a prominent Conservative activist in the United States last week.

Charlie Kirk, the founder of youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during an appearance at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was formally charged with aggravated murder in connection with Kirk’s death during a court appearance on Tuesday, a charge that could result in the death penalty in Utah if convicted.

The Regina vigil featured music and prayer as supporters gathered to pay tribute, some supporters carrying signs in Kirk’s memory.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also posted a message online earlier this week saying he was saddened by Kirk’s death.

“My government and I condemn political violence of any kind,” Moe said. “Open dialogue and freedom of expression are the bedrock of any healthy democracy. While we may disagree, violence has no place in our democracies.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family who are left behind.”

Kirk was also given a standing ovation in the House of Commons on Monday, following an address from Conservative MP Rachael Thomas.

“May we be honourable in our actions. May we fiercely defend the right of our opponents to speak freely, and may we join our hearts with Charlie’s family: his wife Erika and his two young children. Rest in peace,” Thomas said, followed by a roar of applause.

None of the charges against Robinson have been proven in court.
