Here’s the status on wildfires near La Ronge and Denare Beach

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says it’s currently managing multiple fires in the La Ronge and Denare Beach protection areas, all ignited by lightning strikes.

La Ronge – Highway Fire

This fire was first reported June 14 and was caused by lightning, according to the SPSA. It is subject to an ongoing assessment but isn’t considered a concern as of Monday. The Highway Fire is approximately 0.2 hectares in size.

Crews are monitoring the fire with infrared scanners, checking for remaining hot spots. The SPSA said crews would monitor the area for the next few days.

La Ronge – Duck Fire

Another fire that was caused by lightning. It was first reported June 5 and is 477 hectares in size, according to the SPSA. That’s about the size of 890 football fields, or 4.77 square kilometres.

As of Monday, it still wasn’t contained and it’s currently being worked on by Type 1 and Type 2 crew. Type 3 crews will assist for the mop-up stages on the fire’s lower intensity lines.

La Ronge – Drope Fire

The Drope Fire was also caused by lightning. It was first reported on June 14 and was not contained as of Monday afternoon.

The SPSA said Type 1 and 2 crews will boat to the fire line on Monday. The Drope Fire is four hectares in size.

La Ronge – Tikan Fire

This fire was reported on June 14 and was not contained as of Monday. It is 10 hectares in size.

“Crews are constructing helipads to access the fire and setting up values protection. Once helipads are established, crews will begin to work the fireline,” read the SPSA’s update.

Denare Beach – Arm Fire

The Arm Fire near Denare Beach was reported on June 14 and was not contained as of Monday. It was also caused by lightning and is six hectares in size. The SPSA says crews will start laying line around the fire edge.
