Litres of ‘date rape’ drug seized in Sask./B.C. trafficking investigation

WATCH: A man is facing several charges after a drug bust at a home in the City of Weyburn. The intercepted package contained 17 litres of a date rape drug.

Officers in Saskatchewan are reporting success following a joint investigation into drug trafficking with police in British Columbia.

The operation led to the interception and seizure of a package en route to a home in Weyburn, Sask. on April 4.

The package included approximately 17.75 litres of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) – commonly known as a “date rape” drug due to its ability to be secretly added to beverages.

GHB is colourless, odourless and tasteless and is known to induce euphoria, lower inhibitions, and can lead to memory loss.

“By preventing any GHB from reaching the streets of Weyburn, we can avoid many unsuspecting victims,” Weyburn police said in a news release.

The value of the seized GHB has an estimated street value ranging from $10,000 to $18,000.

On April 7, Weyburn police officers arrested a 35-year-old Weyburn man in connection with the intercepted package.

Following the arrest, officers executed a search warrant of the man’s home.

As a result of the investigation, the accused has been charged with possession of GHB for the purposes of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The operation was a collaboration between the Vancouver Police Department’s gang crime unit and the Weyburn Police Service’s drug enforcement unit.
