The Melfort Mustangs scored three times and Kristian Coombs turned aside all 22 shots he faced on Sunday night to draw even with the Weyburn Red Wings in the SJHL’s championship series.
Tempers flared in game two with the Red Wings and Mustangs combining for 80 minutes in penalties. The Mustangs played 12 of 20 minutes in the second period on the powerplay. Weyburn took seven straight penalties to start the period including a misconduct penalty borne of frustration when Cyprus Smith-Davis shot the puck away from a linesman after a call was made. Logan Belton scored on a 5-on-3 power play taking a feed from Reilley Kotai at a sharp angle and blasting it past Wings goalie Angelo Zol.
Belton would add another midway through the second, as a Red Wing penalty expired, to increase the lead to 2-0. Bo Eisner scored an unassisted goal just over two minutes into the third period to make it 3-0.
Angelo Zol was so busy in the Weyburn crease that he turned to guzzling mustard to help alleviate cramping. The veteran turned aside 31 of 34 shots he faced in the Weyburn goal.
The series is now tied at a game apiece and will shift to Weyburn for games three and four starting on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
