WATCH: Regina has the third most violent crimes per capita in Canada, according to a new report by the Fraser Institute. Hallee Mandryk has the details.

The Fraser Institute recently conducted a study measuring the violent crime rates in Canada’s metropolitan cities. Regina landed as third on this list, with Saskatoon trailing right behind in fourth place.

The study measures the number of violent crimes (assaults, homicides, robberies etc.) in comparison with every 100,000 people in Canada’s metropolitan cities.

The top five highest crime rates per 100,000 people, according to the study, are:

  • Winnipeg - 675
  • Thunder Bay - 546
  • Regina- 472
  • Saskatoon- 413
  • Lethbridge- 402

The national average was 262.

Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski shared that it is certainly not what he wants the city to be known for.

“We don’t want to be anywhere near the top obviously but it’s just important we focus on what can we gather for information and how do we make good decisions on how we put different resources or initiatives in place to tackle that.”

The Fraser institute additionally looked at the numbers of urban property crime per capita, in which Regina also landed in the third place slot.

Saskatoon, however, did better on this list in the 10th place position.
