WATCH: A fire caused damage to a unit in south Regina. Tenants in an adjacent lot also had to deal with a watermain break. Angela Stewart reports.

A significant fire caused major damage to a unit of a Regina four-plex on Thursday night.

According to Regina Fire and Protective Services, firefighters were called to the structure in Gladmer Park just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters described heavy smoke and fire conditions upon arrival, before the blaze was brought under control and “contained to the unit of origin.”

All occupants of the unit were able to get out safely, with no injuries reported, but they were assisted by mobile crisis due to the extreme smoke, fire and water damage to the unit.

Just across the way, a big watermain break caused massive flooding in a parking lot in the same complex.

According to Boardwalk, the company that operates the units at Wascana Park Estates, there were 18 vehicles in the parking lot at the time of the flood.

A tenant in a neighboring unit said he’s never seen anything like this before.

“Been nine years in this area, and it’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this. The infrastructure’s 50 years old in here so there’s just, water will break where it’s weakest point,” said Bernad Mroczko.

There are 316 units in the complex and it’s unclear whether the incidents are related in any way. No other unit was damaged in the fire.

An investigation determined the fire was accidental and was caused by unattended cooking.

Regina Fire & Protective Services wants to remind everyone to practice fire safe cooking. Including staying in the kitchen while things are cooking on the stovetop and to have a lid nearby to smother any flames.
