With gopher control underway City of Regina asks residents to closely monitor children, pets

Published:

With a gopher control program set to get underway in Regina, the city is asking residents to closely monitor children and pets where measures are in place.

In a news release, the city says it will be using the Health Canada approved product Rozol RTU on rough turf areas like storm channels, roadways and railway buffer zones. The city said the product will not be used in athletic fields or park spaces.

“Thirty-two areas have been identified for treatment this year and will be marked with yellow signs. City crews will monitor these sites daily for several weeks following the pest control application to ensure safety and effectiveness. Signs will remain in place until staff confirm that the site is clear of the product and gopher activity is under control,” the release said.

According to the city, spring is the most effective time for gopher control as the rodents emerge from burrows to search for food. The program will begin this week and run over the next several weeks, the city said.

An overpopulation of gophers can be a nuisance, and the animals can create holes that pose safety hazards for residents and pets, particularly in parks and athletic fields, the city said.
