Woman searching for answers after dog shot by Regina police officer

WATCH: A Regina woman is searching for answers after her dog was shot in front of her home by a police officer.

Jennifer Godfrey is searching for answers after her dog Bane was shot in front of her home by Regina police. Officers were at her home responding to a call claiming that two dogs were taken without permission from another home in the area.

“Neither of my dogs were showing aggression when they got out of the house, but Bane was vocal and looks meaner, so he started to bark,” Godfrey said. “As he got close to the police car, they had about 15 feet to go around the car and they headed towards the officer on the other side, before Bane got around halfway to the other side of the vehicle the officer already had pulled out his gun and started shooting at him.”

Bane was shot once in the chest and again in the leg, Godfrey said.

Godfrey claims she was going into her house to provide proof of ownership of her two dogs Bane and Sadie when the incident happened.

The Acting Chief of the Regina Police Service (RPS) Lorilee Davies said the facts of the case are still to being determined.

“That is under investigation by our use of force and so that investigation is just beginning. I’m not privy to any other details and so there really isn’t anything else I can say at this time,” Davies said.

Godfrey says she has been left in the dark when it comes to the status of the investigation and the health of Bane.

“I know that Bane was taken to animal emergency because they had asked me what vet clinic to take him to, but they won’t give me any information. They said it has to go through police because it’s under investigation, but yet the other owner, my daughter, who’s listed as the other owner, has been given information that I have not.”

Godfrey’s daughter Annika told CTV News that according to her grandmother, Bane will likely need his leg amputated due to an infection caused by the gunshot wound. Annika has started a Go Fund Me page to raise money for Bane’s medical expenses and questions why the police did not use a taser or bring animal control to the call.

The incident is still under investigation, in the meantime the Regina Police Service Use of Force Review Board will be looking into the occurrence, the incident will also be reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
