‘Next generation is here’: Annual beef expo returns to Saskatoon for 11th year

The eleventh annual Saskatchewan Beef Expo returned to Saskatoon over the weekend, and the next generation of the agriculture industry showed off their skills.

“The next generation is here. We are working with them so that they can gain some education in the cattle industry. And they are working hard on the projects that they bring. So it’s a big part of the agriculture mandate here at Prairieland for education, so that’s what this weekend’s all about,” Leigh Ann Hurlburt, agriculture manager for Prairieland, said.

The expo aims to connect young cattle producers with one another and provide valuable education.

For many of those in attendance, it has been an annual tradition for several years.

“We have a lot of exhibitors that have been here for quite a few years, and they love coming because we provide education as well as the kids get to participate in competition,” Hurlburt said.

Sunday marked the heifer and steer show, which provided an opportunity for the young producers to showcase what they’ve been working on throughout the year.

“Competition is always great, and the kids are here enjoying it, and the people love it because it is a little more laid-back,” Hurlburt said.

The seminar led by renowned cattle expert Kirk Stierwalt also drew in a crowd.

“He spent the last couple of days showing off all kinds of tips and tricks and just helps. It’s an experience and education in the livestock fitting area. So that’s kind of the highlight the kids love to see,” Hurlburt said.

The agriculture manager went on to share that the team behind the Sask. Beef Expo will dive right into planning for the following year once the 2025 expo wraps up on Sunday.
