Saskatoon residents were treated to a cosmic light show over the weekend, with vivid aurora dancing in the skies around the city.

We’re sharing a selection of photos sent to us by CTV viewers. You can view them in the photo box at the top of this story.

The past year has been interesting for sky watchers in the province.

In October, a rare comet could be seen streaking across the Saskatchewan skyline for several days, and in May 2024, a massive solar storm brought bright displays of the northern lights further south than many in the province have experienced before.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are the result of storms on the surface of the sun.

These storms can cause what’s called coronal mass ejections, which send plasma hurtling toward the earth.

When this solar plasma collides with the earth’s magnetic field at the north or south poles, it causes a reaction that produces the lights we see in the sky.
