A 46-year-old man from the Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation faces weapons charges after a 19-year-old man was found dead in a vehicle in the community.

Battlefords RCMP officers were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon, according to a Saskatchewan RCMP news release on Monday. The victim was identified as a 19-year-old man from the nearby Red Pheasant Cree Nation.

Investigators believe a conflict broke out between two groups, both travelling in vehicles. A firearm was discharged, injuring the 19-year-old man, who later died of his injuries.

The RCMP’s major crimes unit took over the investigation, and on Sunday, 46-year-old Darren Wahobin from Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation was arrested and charged with several firearms offences.

He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.

The major crimes unit is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
