Metrolinx considering parking fee for GO Transit lots

Metrolinx is considering charging GO Transit riders a fee to use its parking lots as a way to fund a massive transit expansion plan.

The transit agency is currently considering a number of options to generate revenue to pay for transit improvements in the Toronto and Hamilton areas.

As they made their way to work Friday morning, many commuters weren’t happy to learn that their days of free parking at GO stations may be over, arguing they already pay enough to travel by train or bus.

At Rutherford GO Station in Vaughan, some riders told CP24 reporter Cam Woolley they may drive to work if Metrolinx begins charging for parking.

“Absolutely, I would have to consider it because the cost (of fares) has gone up significantly since I started taking it roughly 12 years ago,” said John, a GO Transit rider. “The convenience of taking a vehicle, I understand gas prices have gone up, but I think it comes to a point where you start getting the laws of diminishing returns, if you will. It’s not worth it.”
