A major winter storm is bearing down on Toronto with the potential to bring the largest snowfall total that the city has seen in nearly two years.

CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter says that Toronto will see between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow between late Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning.

The last time the city got that much snow was in March, 2023 and city officials have already indicated that it could take several days to fully dig out.

Coulter says that he is expecting that the snowfall associated with the storm will begin somewhere between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., resulting in a messy commute.

He says that the snowfall will be light at first but will “ramp up throughout the evening and in the early overnight hours” with the potential for two to four centimetres of snow per hour at its peak.

He says that he is anticipating five to 10 centimetres of snow by midnight with another 10 to 15 centimetres by 7 a.m. Thursday.

“I think everyone has to make some adjustments for what is coming. It is a very significant system and most of that is coming in snow,” he says. “The most intense period (of snow) will be in the evening and early overnight hours. The strongest winds will come between about 5 p.m. and midnight when it will gust 50 to 60 kilometres per hour and and that is when it will still be cold enough to get looser snow that is blowing and drifting.”
