The body of an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer who died in a crash earlier this week was transported to Oshawa on Thursday.

Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, was on duty Monday evening when he was involved in a deadly single-vehicle motorcycle collision on Highway 401 in Cobourg, Ont.

The circumstances leading to the crash are still under investigation. Malcolm’s body was brought to the chief coroner’s office in Toronto following the incident.

A procession carrying his remains left the Centre of Forensic Sciences shortly after 1 p.m., as dozens of police officers lined the route.

The convoy then travelled east along Highway 401 to a funeral home in Oshawa. The OPP said funeral arrangements are still being planned.

Malcolm joined the Northumberland Detachment of the OPP in June 2020 and served as a member of the force’s Golden Helmets, a specialized motorcycle team. He previously served as a combat engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces and was an auxiliary member of the Toronto Police Service.

CP24 crime specialist and former police officer Steve Ryan followed the procession and said members of the Golden Helmets escorted Malcolm’s hearse.

“There’s a closeness amongst all police officers, and it’s something that is really hard to understand unless you’ve been part of it,” Ryan said.

“But I can tell you, as a bike squad, they are as close as any squad can be. So it’s very difficult for them. It’s an honour for them.”

Ryan said it’s unclear if a ceremonial police funeral will be held for Malcolm, noting that it will be up to his family to decide if it wants the ceremony.
