A woman has been pronounced dead and one man is in custody following an incident at a home in Brampton.
First responders were called to an apartment building on Kennedy Road South, north of Steeles Avenue, at around 8:40 a.m. for a “disturbance,” Peel Regional Police said.
Inside the unit, they found one woman who had suffered a “penetrating trauma,” Peel Regional Paramedic Services said.
“She was transported by paramedics to a trauma center in life-threatening condition,” Acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene. “She has since been pronounced deceased in hospital.”
Patten said the woman is believed to be in her 40s.
She said a man in his 30s has been taken into custody as a suspect in the case.
“It is my understanding that they are known to each other. However, it’s still under investigation,” Patten said.
No other injuries have been reported. However Patten confirmed a child was in the unit at the time of the incident.
“It is my understanding that there was a child that was in the residence at the time and the child was the one who contacted police,” she said.
There is a heavy police presence in the area as officers investigate the fatal incident. People are being advised to avoid the area for the time being.
“Anyone with any information should please contact our homicide and missing persons bureau,” Patten said.
