3 underage riders caught operating e-dirt bikes dangerously in Kelowna, RCMP say

Three underage e-dirt bike riders are facing penalties after allegedly fleeing from police following an incident in Kelowna, where Mounties say “high-risk” riding is a growing problem.

Kelowna RCMP said officers came across three young people operating e-dirt bikes dangerously while conducting routine traffic safety patrols in the city last week.

“The situation escalated when the riders fled from police but were later located without incident,” Mounties said in a news release on Wednesday.

All three e-dirt bikes have since been impounded and police said the riders are now facing “significant” financial penalties under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.

“Traffic safety remains a focused priority for the Kelowna RCMP, with specific attention on high-risk driving behaviour,” Cpl. Steven Lang said in the release. “When necessary, our officers will take appropriate enforcement action to help prevent a tragic collision in our community.”

Mounties said the enforcement effort comes amid a rise in complaints from Kelowna residents about dangerous micromobility vehicle use, which includes e-bikes, e-dirt bikes, e-scooters, mopeds and mini-motorcycles.

Authorities added that the crackdown is also focused on education, including informing riders and parents about safety requirements, legal obligations and the risks tied to improper use.
