All of the residents of a four-storey apartment building in Chilliwack have been displaced after a massive fire caused extensive damage Saturday afternoon.

The Chilliwack Fire Department was called to the scene on Corbould Street near Spadina Avenue just after 3:30 p.m.

“Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy smoke and visible flames venting from the building’s eaves, while evacuation was already underway and alarms sounding,” a news release from the department said.

“Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack alongside an interior search to ensure all occupants had exited safely.”

No residents or firefighters were injured, but the location of the fire made it particularly challenging to get under control, according to the department.

“Despite an intensive firefighting effort, the unprotected attic space – offering ample fuel and oxygen – allowed the fire to move rapidly through the attic along the length of the building,” the statement from the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the displaced residents have been connected to emergency support services.
