Another $220K in city funding proposed for struggling Vancouver summer festivals

Vancouver council is set to vote on providing $220,000 in one-time grants to summer events facing financial struggles this year due, in part, to the FIFA World Cup.

Councillors Sarah Kirby-Yung and Lisa Dominato are bringing a motion Wednesday that would see money allocated to seven events, including Greek Day on Broadway, LightUP! Chinatown, and Carnaval del Sol.

“The delivery of major international events, including FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Vancouver, has created an unusually competitive sponsorship and advertising environment, making it significantly more difficult for community festivals and cultural organizations to secure corporate support and fundraising revenues that have historically contributed to their operations,” the motion says.

“Council recognizes that many established festivals and events are facing unique financial pressures in 2026 despite demonstrating strong public attendance, significant community benefit, and substantial volunteer support.”

Kirby-Yung and Dominato’s motion says these grants should not be understood as anything more than a one-year stopgap measure necessitated by the combination of circumstances at play this year.

The move is the latest instance of council being asked to chip in to make sure popular community events can proceed. Vancouver Pride, the Vaisakhi Parade and Festival, Italian Day on the Drive and Car Free Days are among those that have received city funding this year via extraordinary grants. The amount the city agreed to spend to support those four events totalled $210,000.

Motions to support those events have passed unanimously, as did one to create a dedicated festival support fund.

Other, pricier propositions for summer events in the city have been more controversial.

Mayor Ken Sim’s plan to fill the gap left by the cancelled Celebration of Light by $2 million on a fireworks display was slammed and voted against by opposition councillors. Extending the Granville Street pedestrian zone until Labour Day at a cost of $4.75 million also generated fierce debate and some backlash.
