‘Déjà vu’: Vancouver faces prospect of losing another team as Whitecaps future questioned

Like the Grizzlies before them, the Vancouver Whitecaps seem destined to be relocated south of the border.

Vancouver sports fans have experienced both the highs of new franchises and the heartbreak of losing them.

From the arrival of NHL hockey in the 1970s to the departure of the NBA’s Grizzlies to Memphis in 2001, the city has seen how quickly the sports landscape can shift.

Now, concerns are growing that history could repeat itself.

A formal bid has been made to purchase the Vancouver Whitecaps and relocate the Major League Soccer club to Las Vegas, a development that has left fans and former players uneasy.

“I was talking about it in the car with my son, and it kind of hit me,” said former Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit.

DeMerit said the possibility of losing the club is troubling, not just for supporters, but for the broader soccer community. He noted the team has built a loyal following and become part of the city’s culture.

Whitecaps management maintains there is currently no viable offer on the table to keep the team in Vancouver.

The uncertainty comes despite strong on-field performance, with the club near the top of the standings. Financially, however, the picture is less favourable, with the team ranking near the bottom of the league in revenue.

“There aren’t a ton of highly profitable teams in MLS,” said Patrick Johnston of the Vancouver Sun and The Province. “The ones that are, they own their stadiums and host events beyond just soccer.”

Johnston pointed to clubs in markets like Los Angeles and Miami — which have drawn global attention, including the signing of superstar Lionel Messi — as examples of teams maximizing revenue opportunities.

BC Place, where the Whitecaps play, is owned and operated by the provincial government, though a recent agreement allows the club to collect game-day revenue. Johnston said while similar arrangements exist elsewhere, not having full control of the venue can limit a team’s ability to grow its business and offset losses.

Moshe Lander, an economics professor at Concordia University, said the stadium itself is part of the problem.

“Fundamentally, it’s the wrong stadium,” he said.

Lander noted that many modern MLS venues are purpose-built for crowds of 25,000 to 30,000 — far smaller than BC Place — allowing teams to create a more tailored fan experience and stronger revenue streams.

He said those structural challenges, combined with the added costs and operating a Canadian franchise, could put the Whitecaps at a disadvantage.

“They’re gone. It’s just a matter of time,” Lander said.

He added that losing another professional team could damage Vancouver’s reputation as a viable sports market, particularly as the city continues efforts to attract a Major League Baseball franchise.

Former Grizzlies owner reacts

For Arthur Griffiths, the former owner who helped bring the Grizzlies to Vancouver, the situation feels all too familiar.

Speaking with CTV News, Griffiths described the uncertainty surrounding the Whitecaps as “déjà vu,” saying the loss of a team can leave a lasting mark on a city.

“Any time a major league franchise leaves, for whatever reason, it’s a black eye,” he said.

Griffiths pointed to past challenges with arena agreements during the Grizzlies era, using the Pacific Coliseum as an example and how it wasn’t “going to work.” He says he sees the Whitecaps in the ideal location, but need they need to figure out the lease.

He noted the Whitecaps are performing well on the field and continue to energize their fan base, not only locally but around the world, and believes that should count in their favour.

Griffiths added that while the situation is complex, he believes solutions can be found.

“I’m hopeful there will be a resolution,” he said.

The Whitecaps say they remain committed to Vancouver, but with reported interest from outside investors, the club’s long-term future remains uncertain.
