Mounties say a Squamish, B.C., man has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm after a pedestrian and a baby were struck by a vehicle in a marked crosswalk in the city last year.

The accused, Kyle Luca, is also charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop at a collision causing bodily harm and dangerous driving.

Officers were called to the downtown intersection of Pemberton and Second avenues at around 8:30 p.m. on April 22, 2024, after multiple witnesses reported seeing a vehicle strike a pedestrian and a baby stroller before dragging the stroller for several blocks with the infant still inside, according to police.

The driver fled the scene and was later arrested a couple blocks away, police said. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Sea to Sky RCMP following the crash.

Luca was charged in relation to the incident on March 11. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 23 in North Vancouver provincial court.

“We are committed to keeping our communities safe and are pleased that the culmination of this investigation has led to charges,” Sgt. Dallas Langley said in a statement announcing the charges Friday.
