Whether you’re a Metro Vancouver resident staying local over the Easter long weekend or an out-of-town visitor here to see family or friends, there are lots of events to check out across the region. Here are some options to consider.

Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade

After Vancouver’s Sikh community hosted its Vaisakhi festival and parade last weekend, Saturday is Surrey’s turn.

Roughly half a million people attend the Surrey Vaisakhi parade each year, making it the largest such celebration in the world, according to organizers.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Temple on 85 Avenue, and road closures will be in effect in the area from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

10th Annual Big Easter Run

An Easter weekend tradition is returning to Jericho Beach Park for its 10th year. The Big Easter Run features a one-to-three-kilometre course for kids, which is followed by an egg hunt.

There are also five- and 10-kilometre courses for adults that showcase the natural beauty of the park and its “unbeatable views” of the North Shore and the Vancouver skyline.

The festivities begin at noon, and more information is available on the race website.

Rabbitats Easter BunnyFest

Metro Vancouver’s rabbit rescue charity is marking Easter weekend with the return of its annual BunnyFest at Lulu Island Winery on Westminster Highway in Richmond.

Rabbitats Rescue Society will host its signature “meet and treat” – which allows visitors to observe a colony of rabbits and enter their enclosure to feed them treats – as well as vegan sweets, games, face-painting, crafts and “bunny-themed knick-knacks.”

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is by donation and all proceeds go to support Rabbitats’ efforts to save and control unwanted and abandoned pet rabbits.

Easter at the Cannery

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Steveston swaps bunnies for fish in its annual Easter celebration, with crafts, storytime and a salmon-themed scavenger hunt on offer from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

More information can be found on the national historic site’s website.

Warrior Festival

The first shows of The Cultch’s Warrior Festival were held Wednesday and Thursday, and additional performances of the festival’s first play – Lxdy Parts: Babes – are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Vancity Culture Lab.

Warrior Festival “celebrates the strength of women and gender-expansive artists who are reclaiming space, rewriting narratives, and advocating for justice from the stage to the street,” according to The Cultch.

Five works are being produced as part of the festival, which runs through May 11. Learn more on The Cultch website.

Inlet Spring Regatta

Dragon boat enthusiasts will gather at Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park on Saturday for the Inlet Spring Regatta, a 200-metre race event hosted by Nothin’ Dragon Paddling Society.

Spectators are welcome to come watch the races and enjoy live music, food trucks, vendors and a beer garden. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m., with races beginning at 8:30 and the festival continuing until 5:30 p.m.
