The former president of the BC Nurses Union has died, according to condolences coming in from provincial officials over the weekend.

Aman Grewal led the union between 2021 and 2023. The BCNU says she was a strong advocate for members and helped negotiate the 2022-2025 collective agreement. Grewal also represented the province nationally on the board of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions.

“Our condolences go out to Aman’s family, friends, and all who knew her during this time,” reads a Friday social media post from the BCNU.

“Incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Aman Grewal, former president of the (BCNU),” wrote Premier David Eby on social media.

“One of the people behind the first nurse-to-patient ratios in Canada, she was a fierce advocate for health care workers,” he continued.

Grewal began her career at Surrey Memorial Hospital and held a variety of nursing positions for more than three decades, according to a biography on the union’s website. She had been involved in labour actions since the late ’80s.
