In what will come as bad news to those looking to hike the rugged terrain of Vancouver Island’s west coast this summer, a wilderness trail within the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park is not repaired in time for the season.
Due to extensive damage from storms through the fall and winter, the province says the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail will remain closed throughout summer 2025.
Officials say sections of the 47-kilometre-long trail were washed away or blocked by fallen trees, making the route impassable and unsafe. In addition, bridges, boardwalks, shelters and campsites are damaged.
Five backcountry campgrounds located along the trail intended for multi-day hikes—Bear Beach, Chin Beach, West Sombrio Beach, Little Kuitsche Creek and Payzant Creek—will stay closed for the season.
However, some camping and day-use areas within the wider Juan de Fuca Park including Mystic Beach, East Sombrio Beach, China Beach, and Botanical Beach remain available for visitors.
Updates on the trail reopening can be found on the BC Parks website.
