One person is dead and another is injured after they were extricated from the wreckage of a two-vehicle crash on Vancouver Island over the weekend.

Mounties responded to the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Boys Road, south of Duncan, shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday after two pickup trucks collided.

A statement from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP says a Dodge Ram 3500 rolled over onto its roof, trapping two people inside, after colliding with a Dodge Ram 1500.

The driver of the Dodge Ram 1500 was already safely out of the vehicle when officers arrived, police said. However, firefighters and paramedics had to extricate the driver and passenger from the overturned truck.

“Both were taken to hospital,” the statement said. “Sadly, the passenger of the vehicle, an adult man, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed for several hours as police conducted a forensic examination of the scene. The highway reopened to traffic around 1 a.m., police said.

Collision investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash but police do not believe alcohol was a contributing factor, the statement said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dash-camera video from the scene and has not spoken to investigators is asked call the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
