Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for much of Vancouver Island Friday morning, as thick fog blankets its west and inland regions.

According to the weather agency, visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near-zero in these parts.

Commuters are advised to prepare for hazardous travel, and to turn lights on and maintain a safe following distance if visibility is reduced while on the road.

The fog is expected to clear by Friday afternoon.
