Vehicle found ablaze after ‘brazen’ daylight drive-by shooting in Coquitlam

Shots rang out in Coquitlam Monday morning in what police say was a targeted and reckless drive-by shooting.

One person was taken to hospital after a “brazen” drive-by shooting in Coquitlam Monday morning, according to authorities.

Just after 9 a.m., multiple 911 calls came in reporting a “believed shooting” in the area of Lea Avenue and Dogwood Street in the Burquitlam areas, the RCMP said in a news release.

“Upon arrival, police located one adult suffering from gunshot injuries who was transported to hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries,” a spokesperson said.

The statement did not indicate where, exactly, the shooting victim was found or the extent of their injuries.

“Subsequent to the incident, a motor vehicle collision ensued with a nearby vehicle, however no significant injuries were sustained,” the statement from Coquitlam RCMP continued.

Authorities did not explain how or whether the crash and shooting were connected.

Soon after the shooting, officers in Burnaby were called to the scene of a vehicle on fire, which is a hallmark of gang-related shootings.

Coquitlam RCMP have not commented on a potential motive, but did say investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

“This brazen daytime shooting is concerning, and such incidents will not be tolerated in our communities,” said Coquitlam RCMP Supt. Darren Carr,

“We take these reckless acts of violence seriously and we are committed to bringing those responsible before the courts to be held accountable so our communities we serve remain safe.”
