Police reviewing video purportedly showing fatal Pattullo Bridge crash

As police continue to investigate the cause of a crash that killed three people on a Metro Vancouver bridge, video from the dash cam of the semi involved has been posted online.

First responders were called to the Pattullo Bridge, which connects Surrey and New Westminster, just after 10 p.m. Friday for reports of a crash involving a transport truck and two other vehicles.

The video, posted to Facebook by Skilled Truckers Canada, was purportedly submitted to the online group by the driver. Police say they are aware of the video and that it is “part of the investigation.”

In it, the semi can be seen driving over the dark bridge when – seemingly out of nowhere – a light, four-door vehicle enters the frame, spinning out of control from the opposite lane and directly into the path of the truck. Next, the truck swerves into the opposite lane, and another car can be seen in its path. It is not clear if that vehicle was struck by the semi, and the video ends with the truck hitting the bridge’s side railing.

A statement from the Surrey Police Service Friday night said the truck driver was uninjured. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, with one survivor suffering life-threatening injuries.

Asked about the survivor’s condition Monday, a spokesperson for the SPS said the person remains in hospital but is expected to live.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and “nothing has been ruled out,” an emailed statement to CTV news said. Investigators efforts are focused on analyzing the evidence from the scene while they await the results of forensic testing.

Authorities said they expect it will be “some time” before enough information has been gathered to provide a substantial update on what the investigation uncovers.
