Sea-to-Sky reopens after multi-car crash forces six-hour road closure Sunday

A multi-car collision led to the closure of the Sea-To-Sky highway for nearly six hours Sunday afternoon.

The crash took place just after 3:30 p.m. between three cars on Highway 99, just north of Britannia Beach, Squamish RCMP said in a statement.

The collision involved several people, who were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said police. There were no fatalities.

DriveBC announced the opening of both lanes at around 9:45 p.m. Sunday evening, but warned travellers that delays were still to be expected in the area.

Megan Merrifield, a Vancouver resident who had been returning home from a ski trip in Whistler early Sunday afternoon, was stuck between Squamish and Porteau Cove at a standstill for five hours, before traffic began moving intermittently, she said.

One man a few cars behind Merrifield had left his vehicle to help at the scene, while other drivers and passengers were walking up and down the highway, she said.

By 8 p.m., Merrifield had pulled into a layby to ride out the remainder of the wait.

“It was very cold, but luckily I had all of my ski gear and camping supplies in my boot, so I blew up my mattress and stayed in the car,” she said.

Three ambulances and police, including a police helicopter, attended the scene, she said.

In a statement Monday morning, Squamish RCMP said the crash is still being investigated.
