Snowfall warning issued for Sea to Sky Hwy. around Whistler

Drivers heading for Whistler on Christmas Eve are being warned to watch for challenging winter conditions on the Sea to Sky Highway.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said a strong low-pressure system tracking over B.C.’s South Coast is expected to dump 15 to 25 centimetres of snow along the winding highway Wednesday.

“Travel will likely be challenging,” the agency said in a snowfall warning. “Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

A travel advisory is in effect for a 59-kilometre stretch of the Sea to Sky from Brew Creek Road to Rancheree Road.

Winter driving conditions are expected to last through Wednesday evening, with visibility “likely” to be reduced at times, according to Environment Canada.

Officials recommended that drivers turn on their lights, slow down and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
