Suspect charged in shove that sent B.C. cyclist crashing onto sidewalk

Months after a motorcyclist was caught on camera shoving a man on a bicycle in Nanaimo, B.C., a suspect has been identified and charged.

Nanaimo RCMP said the incident caused the victim to lose control of his bike and crash face-first onto the sidewalk, leaving him in need of medical attention.

The motorcyclist continued on without stopping, authorities said.

On Monday, the RCMP announced charges of assault and dangerous driving against Marcel Trudeau, a 48-year-old Nanaimo resident.

Social media video captured the incident, which happened as the motorcyclist and victim were heading in the same direction near Departure Bay Road and Granite Park Road.

In a statement, Const. Gary O’Brien said the video was “extremely useful” to the RCMP, as it “allowed the investigation to move forward and for police to identify the suspect.”

Trudeau is scheduled to make a first appearance in Nanaimo provincial court on Oct. 7.
