Mounties are investigating after a teen girl reported being sexually assaulted in the steam room of a public recreation facility on Vancouver Island. A 17-year-old reported being sexually assaulted at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre on July 16, the Nanaimo RCMP said in a statement Thursday. Police said they worked with the City of Nanaimo, which operates the facility, to identify a suspect and that a 43-year-old man was arrested the following day. He has not been charged and was released with conditions while the investigation continues. “Everyone has the right to feel safe in our public spaces and recreation facilities,” Insp. Donovan Tait said, in the statement. “Incidents of sexual assault are taken very seriously, and this type of criminal behavior will not be tolerated.” Police did not provide any additional details about the alleged sexual assault.
