Police in Chilliwack, B.C., are urging drivers to slow down after nabbing two excessive speeders clocking over 190 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
The two men were caught at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28, driving sedans in the same eastbound lane of Highway 1 at Popkum Road, said the BC Highway Patrol in a statement Tuesday.
Crp. Michael McLaughlin said the BC Highway Patrol vehicle, equipped with cameras, radar and laser speed readers, was able to capture the speeding cars racking up 192 km/h in the 100 km/h area.
“The first driver pulled over immediately, but the second driver required persuasion by phone to return to the scene,” said McLaughlin.
One driver was a Surrey man in his own car, while the other was a foreign national in a rental. Both drivers, who were friends, were slapped with seven-day vehicle impounds and fines for excessive speed, alongside tickets for failing to update their addresses.
McLaughlin said the incident serves as a reminder that, contrary to popular belief, police can stop more than one vehicle at a time.
Both men “have learned a valuable lesson,” after being caught, he said.
“Once their cars were towed, BC Highway Patrol gave them a ride to a local Tim Hortons to think over their life choices,” he said.
“We encourage other drivers to do the same before they make the decision to speed.”
