Warm weather records broken in 13 B.C. communities

It was the warmest June 22 on record in more than a dozen B.C. communities Monday as a hot stretch continues across much of the province, according to Environment Canada data.

Thirteen weather stations recorded maximum temperature records and one municipality, Agassiz, tied its record of 32.2 C from 1958.

The highest record-breaking temperature was in Abbotsford, where the mercury reached 32.4 C on Monday, surpassing its previous high of 31.7 C, also from 1958.

The longest standing records that fell were in Duncan, Victoria and White Rock, where it was the warmest June 22 in 90 years. All three cities beat records from 1936, temperatures reaching 31.8 C in Duncan, 30.9 C in Victoria and 31 C in White Rock.

Temperatures are expected to remain high for the next few days before cooling down later in the week.

• Sechelt: New record of 29.1 C, old record of 28.9 C set in 1958
• Squamish: New record of 33.1 C, old record of 30 C set in 1990
• Victoria Gonzales Point: New record of 27 C, old record of 25 C set in 1961
• Victoria: New record of 30.9 C, old record of 28.9 C set in 1936
